To new beginnings… my transition from radio to video

I love being on the radio. I love being that person keeping you company through the speaker. It could be at the end of your night while relaxing, getting you through your work day, or getting you laughing and motivated in the morning! I get to part of your day. I love the listeners, the programming, the imaging and everything that goes in to all things radio. Music transports you to a place and time with every song played. Sometimes it’s a happy thought, sometimes sad, but every song creates emotion and I loved being the person delivering it.  I have spent my entire 30 year career on the radio. It’s what I know. So, what happens when one day it’s gone?

One thing anyone who has ever been in radio can tell you, you go in to work every day wondering if today will be the day you get fired. Not because of anything you did, just because it’s time for a change; like a wardrobe update. After 22 years on the same station, I was thrown into the donation bin, if you will. So what’s next? I’m an unemployed radio jock living in a town with a lot of unemployed radio jocks and not a lot of radio jobs. I could move and have a new gig in a heartbeat, but I also have three teenagers who are deeply rooted to where we are. Do I want to get back into radio? YES! I also need a job to feed all of those before-mentioned teenagers until lightning strikes again. Enter Plan B… or maybe  it was C or D. Whatever it is, it’s a plan that hadn’t occurred to me before.

I was sitting at home one morning drinking my coffee while watching the birds and squirrels at the feeders (this had become my new pastime since I was doing nothing else). I get a text: “Do you have a minute that we can talk?” Honey, I have had all the minutes to talk for the past 6 months.  A few minutes later I answered the call that set me on a new path.

It turns out, this guys needed someone who had mad customer service skills ✓, could write commercial copy ✓, voice commercials ✓, host a web series ✓ and just represent his company with an overall professional attitude ✓. Five out of five boxes checked!  A few days into the job I would learn these boxes were a bit more like a Rubik’s cube, but hey, it keeps me on my toes.

This is how I ended up on the Jumpstart Video team. I am now a video producer, copywriter, voice over actor, secretary, web host, office cleaning diva. I love my job! I get to be creative. I get make personal connections with our clients and I get to do it all while working with a great team!

I have always been a huge supporter of local businesses and organizations. Now I get to help them grow even more! We create TV commercials, digital ads and promotional videos for them. You know when you go to a charity event and there’s a video they play that tells you all the amazing things the organization does and what your donations go towards? We create those! Need to get your employees on the same page? We create training videos, orientation videos, PR. HR and anything else your company needs! We help businesses and organizations thrive! I get to be part of it all.

I didn’t think I would find anything outside radio that could fulfill me, but this does. I’m so grateful. Every day I learn a little bit more about something new, and I’m grateful for that as well. I get to bring some of my mad skills with me while learning new mad skills that can only make more rounded. It’s a win-win! It’s also a new beginning for me and I am so very thankful for new beginnings.

Here’s to new beginnings!
